The family-oriented POKER RUN ON THE RIVER will originate from the Ouachita River boat dock. Sign up at the boat dock and play “hands” going south and returning north to the home checkpoint. Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place winners.
Caldwell Bank’s annual Antique Car Show “Main Street of Dreams” will begin at 9:00 a.m. Categories will include antique pre- and post war; trucks pre – and post-war; restored classics ‘ 60 or later; street rods/custom: antique unrestored’ and people’s choice.
There will be entertainment all day on two stages one stage will feature Karaoke. Food booths will set up on Main Street with a variety of goodies. Arts and Crafts booths will be set up for your shopping pleasure.

May 8th starting at 4:30 the Monroe Chamber of Commerce will host the ribbon cutting and that will be the kick off of the after hours and “The art of the Home”. 4:30 til 8pm. “The art of the home” show will feature home town artists with different mediums such as sculpture and paintings. Local acclaimed artist Betty Crouch from Bastrop will have her Louisiana series of hand sculpted pottery. Crouch has recently been part of the ULM Juried art show where she received best of show. Her crawfish and oyster series was selected for a piece to be given to Governor Jindal during his address to the Monroe Chamber of Commerce membership. Couch is 70 young and retired and has recently began her art career.

"Moby Pincher's Musical Adventure" is a reportedly amusing and engaging storybook by local author Dee Scallan, concerning a crawfish that stumbles upon the beauty and
enchantment of music. The 25-minute musical is designed for pre-k through third grade classes.

- LOCAL CHURCH ROLLS OUT RED CARPET FOR SINGLE MOMS
This Mother’s Day weekend, LifeChurch West Monroe is hosting its 3rd Annual Single Mom’s Banquet. On Friday, May 9, single mothers from around the area are invited to enjoy a great meal, entertainment and door prizes.
This year’s event is sponsored by Thurmanize Cleaners and Tommy Semmes Land Surveying Co. Door prizes have been donated from area businesses like banks, retail stores, tanning salons, restaurants and more.
“It’s amazing to see this kind of support from the community,” said Pastor Joel Dyke. “This is one of our biggest outreaches of the year and one of our most important. Single moms have one of the hardest jobs out there, and we just want them to know we recognize that.”
Elizabeth Wright, now a Life Church member, attended the first 2
banquets hosted at LifeChurch. “All they wanted to do was to give us a wonderful evening with no worries.” Said Wright. “So I relaxed and started to really enjoy myself. It was great to sit down and enjoy a fabulous meal with other women who knew what you were going though and have an adult conversation and to be waited on by guys in tuxedos.”

- Camp Win-A-Friend 2008
The Louisiana State Police and the Louisiana Trooper Foundation proudly announce the summer 2008 dates for Camp Win-A-Friend.
Camp Win-a-Friend is a summer resident camp for boys and girls between the ages of ten (10) and twelve (12). The Louisiana State Police originally formed the Camp nearly thirty years ago. Today, Camp Win-A-Friend is a joint effort between the Louisiana State Police and the Louisiana Trooper Foundation. The Louisiana Trooper Foundation, formed in 1999, works to develop, establish and support youth programs that promotes positive interaction among troopers, young people and their communities. This collaboration allows the camp to continue to operate in Holden, LA at no cost to the campers or their families. While all children are eligible, there is a special emphasis on those who may be financially unable to attend a camp this summer.
State Troopers will serve as the camp directors, mentors, counselors and instructors. Camp activities will include swimming, canoeing, hiking, arts and crafts, teambuilding, fishing and more. The Louisiana Trooper Foundation will provide all meals during the camp and transportation to and from camp.
Applications for camp can be obtained at the front desk of your local Louisiana State Police Troop or the by calling the Louisiana Trooper Foundation at (225) 346-4357. Space is limited and the deadline for applications is May 9, 2008.

- Downtown Monroe Art Fest 2008 Continues to Grow
Monroe, La--Downtown Monroe Art Fest 2008 presented by Century Tel, Vantage Health Plan, The News Star, TB Architecture and Opus Broadcasting continues to grow! This event will be held Saturday, May 10, 2008, from 12 pm to 6 pm downtown Desiard and 2nd Streets. This festive event will include live performances and presentations by local musicians, dance and theater companies as well as student and professional artists.
Many community groups and organizations have signed on to volunteer their time and talent to help make this new festival series one of Northeast Louisiana ʼs premiere events. - Biedenharn Children’s Activity Celebrates Mother’s Day
The Biedenharn Museum and Gardens invites elementary school aged children to garden for Mom on Saturday, May 10 in ELsong Gardens located at 2006 Riverside Drive in Monroe. Families are welcome to drop-in anytime between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The activity will take between 15-30 minutes to complete. A $5.00 fee per child will cover the cost of supplies. Reservations are not required.
Children will plant Mom an herbal scented treasure in honor of Mother’s Day. They will learn about the many uses for scented herbs and take home recipes for potpourri, sachets and tasty treats! Plants including Kentucky Colonel, Spearmint and Chocolate Mint will be featured.
“Gardening activities like this encourage giving,” explains museum educator Christy Francis. “Gifts like these also bring families together by providing them prolonged enjoyment through both caring for the plant, and also making wonderful treats using the plant once it’s grown.”
When families have finished the activity, they can purchase nickel Coca-Colas, tour the Biedenharn home and stroll through ELsong Gardens. The Biedenharn Museum and Gardens is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Mayor Jamie Mayo, the Monroe City Council and the Department of Community Affairs are pleased to announce the 2008 DeltaFest © Poster Contest has begun with the rules available on the festival website: www.ladeltafest.com.
Mayor Mayo says, “This contest is an outstanding opportunity to showcase the artistic talent in our area, talent of which we are truly Monroe Proud. The posters of the past two years have been delightful and we look forward to a great new design for DeltaFest 2008.”
Director of Community Affairs Johnny Riley says, “This festival is a celebration of our Louisiana culture, our music, our food and our art. We are excited to be able to use this kind of talent to take DeltaFest to the community.”
The DeltaFest © Poster Committee is looking for an image that captures the look and feel of this annual weekend cultural celebration, with its festive mix of music, food and fun.
The 2008 winner of the DeltaFest © Poster Contest will be awarded a check for $500.00. The winning design and artist will be introduced at a media reception and 2ill also be asked to appear on area television programs. The winning poster will also be available for purchase during the festival.

All artists 18 and older may submit work.
Deadline for entries is 5 p.m., May 15, 2008. No entries will be accepted after the deadline for any reason.
All submissions must include name, address and phone number on back of entry.
Artwork may be in any two-dimensional medium.
All artwork must be in full color and 16 X 20 inches in size, image only (The event name will be added by the printer in the final production of poster)
All printing rights will belong to DELTAFEST. The original artwork will be retained by the artist.

- PAWS To Host Open House at Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter
PAWS of NE Louisiana, will host an open house at the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter on Saturday, May 17 from 10-3 at the shelter, 417 Well Road in West Monroe. The event is intended to raise public awareness about the facility and it’s purpose and to find homes for the animals that reside there.
Festivities will include face painting, drawings for two free spay or neuter
surgeries, self-guided tours of the shelter, and of course, time to visit with animals available for adoption. PAWS will also be providing a free pet id tag to each person who brings a donated item (cat litter, canned or dry cat/kitten or puppy food, cleaning supplies, flea dip, etc).

- City Beautification Division announces 2008 Clean Campus Contest
Mayor Jamie Mayo, the Monroe City Council and City of Monroe Beautification Coordinator Jacqueline January are pleased to announce Keep Monroe Beautiful and Forsythe Avenue Beautification are partnering with the City of Monroe to sponsor the 2008 Clean Campus Contest. This contest will involve elementary, middle and high schools within the city limits of Monroe. Judging will take place on May 15-16. Winning schools will be notified on Monday, May 19th.
Participating schools will receive curriculum guides, a list of activities for students that promote responsible waste management and stewardship of the environment, and $100 to use towards their anti-litter, beautification or recycling project. A volunteer panel will judge the schools on their efforts. The University of Louisiana at Monroe invites everyone to attend its third annual signature event Wine Over Water Thursday, May 22 from 7 – 10 p.m.
Guests may experience the tradition by strolling across the historic ULM Bridge spanning the scenic bayou beside the library while sampling wine and hors d’oeuvres from various local restaurants. Proceeds benefit ULM scholarship funds.
Wine Over Water has been recognized as an exemplary alumni event in the country by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.
On the bridge, visitors will be served delectable food samples from Aramark, Catfish Cabin, Copeland’s of New Orleans, Cormier’s, Dan’s BBQ, Dilla’s, Moe’s, Not Just Pie, Pie Works, Portico, Restaurant Sage, Shoney’s, Sports City Grill, The Brandy House, The Kitchen, The Warehouse, Thurman’s, Vieux Carre Gourmet, and Waterfront Grill. Attendees will enjoy more than 15 feature wines provided by Glazer’s and beverages provided by Marsala Beverage and Coca-Cola.
Dr. Zarr’s Amazing Funk Monster will provide live entertainment while guests cruise the beautiful Bayou DeSiard on party barges, compliments of Letsinger Marine. Photography for the evening is provided by Patty Stewart Photography.
As a prelude, the Patron Party will be hosted one hour in advance in the ULM Conference Center, on the 7th floor of the ULM Library overlooking the main event. Patron attendees will enjoy specialties exclusively by Aramark as well as party barge cruises including a complimentary cocktail hour.

- Moonlit Gardens Featuring Magnolia Strings Quartet
Experience the magic of music under moonlit skies when the Biedenharn opens its gates from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. The evening will feature the musical talents of Magnolia Strings. Yearbooks from 1950 through the final class in 1989 will be on display, along with basketball uniforms, trophies and other memorabilia, at the reception which begins at 2:00 p.m. A free-throw contest for male and female former basketball players will be held.
A buffet dinner will begin at 7:00 p.m. Program will include introduction of pre-1940 graduates and special musical entertainment. Door prizes will be awarded and a silent auction will be held.

- "Thanks For The Memories" Theme of Angel Ministries Senior Prom for Seniors
Linda Tripp, Executive Director of Angel Ministries invites all seniors to attend the third annual "Senior Prom for Seniors" USO Dance with a theme of "Thanks for the Memories" on Friday, June 6, 2008 from 7-10 PM at the Ouachita Council On Aging at 2407 Ferrand, Monroe. The dance will feature the music of Brian Lassiter and The Louisiana Big Band.
In commemoration of D Day, June 6, 1944, everyone is invited to take this "Sentimental Journey" back in time and come to the USO Dance and Prom for the evening. Uniforms are optional. A Prom King and Queen will be chosen and surprise entertainment will be added to the festivities. Louisiana Big Band will play the music of the 40s and the war years with plenty of Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Benny Goodman arrangements. This is an opportunity to "swing" and have a great time.
The first 50 ladies to arrive will get a corsage and a complimentary photograph will be taken of all attendees. Refreshments will be served during the evening.
There is no charge for admission but everyone must pick up an invitation and register at the Ouachita Council of Aging at 2407 Ferrand, the West Ouachita Senior Center at 1800 7th Street, West Monroe or Angel Ministries, 509 North 2nd Street, Monroe. - Share of Northeast LA 2nd Annual Walk for Remembrance
Share of Northeast Louisiana will be holding our Second Annual Walk for Remembrance and Hope at Forsythe Park on June 7, 2008. The event is held and sponsored in part with the Annual Celebrity Challange Bass Tournament. Each year the Tournament Committee chooses an organization to sponsor and help bring awarenss to. The days events will include a one or three mile walk, entertainment, food vendors, and door prizes for registered walkers. After the fishermen conclude their weigh-in at approximately 1:00 PM, Share will hold its memorial service and balloon release.
Registration and sign-in for the walk will be held at the bandstand beginning at 8:00AM. The walk will begin at 9:00AM. Bring chairs or blankets so that you can stay and enjoy the entertainment and food while we await the fisherman who have asked that we change the format from last year so that they can be included in the unforgettable memorial service and balloon release.

- Basket Collections For Women In The Military
ANYSOLDIER: Continuing in 2008, we will have a basket at each of our events to collect items for Louisiana women in the military. Here are items needed: snack foods (crackers, cookies, cereal bars, nutrigrain bars, etc), feminine hygiene products, lotions, non-perishable foods/meals; drink mixes (Crystal light, Kool-aid; GatorAide); phone cards; baby wipes, magazines, books, microwave popcorn, gum, canned chicken, beef jerky, hard candy, sheets, pillowcases, pillows, cotton socks; flipflops to wear to the shower; honey; Blistex; toothbrushes; floss; toothpaste; shampoo; deodorant, playing cards, shower gel.
This sounds like small stuff to each one of us but these care packages have significant positive morale impact for our sisters serving in defense of our country. Sorry, no home-made items are allowed. Remember - easy-open-lids! unscented items! no pork products! no chocolate (it melts)! Bring your items to the meeting!
Our first 2 care packages went to SGT Shanna Rutherford and SPC Amy Wilson. Both are from Louisiana-based companies and are with the US Army in Iraq. Our second 2 care packages went to PFC Courtney Waddell and Julie Korb, who are also from Louisiana-based companies and are with the US Army in Iraq.
2008 - We will begin lunch meetings in January. 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Same place - the Atrium! A buffet lunch will be available for $10 per person (This includes tax and tip!). Here are the remaining 2008 meeting dates, so mark your calendars!
